MinDA Underscores BARMM’s Rising Economic Impact and Inclusive Growth Contributions in Mindanao

Iligan Stakeholders Gain Insight into BARMM’s Strengthened Role in Mindanao Growth

The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) reaffirmed the growing importance of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as a major driver of inclusive and sustainable development during the 3rd Private Sector Organization Summit held in Cotabato City. In the event, MinDA emphasized that BARMM is now contributing significantly to Mindanao’s economic momentum, reinforcing regional progress that extends benefits to nearby growth centers such as Iligan.

A presentation onstage featured insights from MinDA Deputy Executive Director Asec. Romeo Montenegro, who spoke on behalf of MinDA Chairperson Sec. Leo Tereso Magno. The keynote message highlighted BARMM’s shift from a region previously seen as lagging in growth to one that now uplifts Mindanao’s overall trajectory through its expanding productivity and resource-rich sectors.

How BARMM’s Progress Strengthens Mindanao and Supports Iligan’s Regional Future

Key points underscored during the summit included BARMM’s strong performance in major agricultural sectors, which directly supports both regional competitiveness and national exports:

  • Globally competitive commodities such as bananas, where the Philippines ranks fourth worldwide, strengthening Mindanao development.
  • Seaweed production leadership, with Tawi-Tawi contributing half of national output, expanding opportunities for regional growth.
  • Coffee production dominance, with eight of the top ten producing provinces located in Mindanao, many within BARMM, showing resilience in inclusive development.

Montenegro stressed that supporting farmers and fisherfolk remains essential to sustaining this momentum. Investments in infrastructure, renewable energy, and climate resilience are seen as central pillars to ensure that communities gain from higher value markets and long-term stability.

BARMM’s strengthened international engagement was also emphasized. Its role in BIMP-EAGA has advanced significantly, with its leadership now fully visible in regional cooperation efforts involving Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

These developments align closely with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s national strategy for balanced regional progress, connecting Mindanao’s priorities with broader goals in renewable energy, infrastructure development, and climate adaptation.

ADVANCE ILIGAN’S ROLE IN MINDANAO’S REGIONAL GROWTH

Residents, local organizations, and development stakeholders in Iligan are encouraged to stay engaged in regional dialogues as BARMM’s progress continues to shape Mindanao’s economic future. Understanding these shifts helps communities anticipate opportunities in trade, infrastructure, and sustainable development while supporting a united and forward-moving Mindanao.
